The Reason the DNC Has Concealed its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: A Deep Dive.

The action from the DNC to withhold the publication regarding its own autopsy report concerning the 2024 election appears remarkable yet to be expected. Opposed to frank assessments, the DNC operates more like a publicity machine rather than an electoral entity focused on building local power for winning elections.

A Climate of Conformity

Hesitant to break with the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has remained within that legacy all through this past year. Making public the findings could have demonstrated that party leaders are interested to encourage honest conversation regarding the missteps that paved the way for Donald Trump to become president again. However, the DNC is proceeding as if there are no lessons to understand following the electoral catastrophe of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? Should the answer be negative, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," a justification reportedly given for withholding the analysis.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Would Have Addressed

A genuine analysis worth its salt would confront key points of failure. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disengagement: The loss among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the party's candidate in 2020 was decisive in the close recent race.
  • The Choice to Run: The unwavering insistence by the incumbent to seek re-election, alongside an extremely delayed step-aside, has been criticized as denying Democratic voters the chance for a genuine choice.
  • Abandoning the Working-Class Base: Amid inflation, the electoral effort reportedly accommodating elite contributors and not managing to challenge the impact of corporate greed.
  • A Gaza Effect: The refusal to shift a policy position regarding a ongoing war is cited as alienating significant blocs, notably among young people, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Losing Young Voter Allegiance: Extensive evidence shows a significant drop-off of Democratic support among young voters.

A History Avoiding Accountability

Choosing secrecy is consistent with a longstanding habit to avoid difficult realities. It recalls a dynamic where the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Washington supported a sitting president's decision for running for re-election right up until a disastrous campaign event forced an exit.

Meanwhile, large majorities of Democratic voters were consistently telling researchers that they opposed the incumbent to run again.

Campaign Spending Concerns

A substantive analysis might also investigate issues about campaign spending, such as the amounts flowed to high-priced advisors and advertising contractors during a campaign which expended a colossal amount over a few months.

The Larger Problem

At its core, the secrecy regarding the analysis highlights a deference toward the existing power structure responsible for a disastrous presidential campaign. The signal to rank-and-file members – which includes millions of small donors – appears to be that they cannot have a right to see what the leadership claim to have learned based on hundreds of interviews drawing from conversations with insiders.

An organization unable to honestly assess its mistakes finds it difficult to climb out of the cycle that ended up being so advantageous to their opponents.
