The Japanese Economy Contracts while Overseas Sales Suffer by American Tariffs
Japan's economy has recorded a decline for the initial time in six quarters, largely driven by falling overseas shipments because of recent American trade duties.
Group of Seven Economic Leaderboard
The Japanese economy stands as the first G7 country to disclose an economic contraction in the most recent three-month period.
As the United States yet to release its GDP data for Q3 2025, the current Group of Seven growth rankings display:
- The French economy: 0.5 percent quarterly growth
- UK: +0.1%
- Canadian economy: +0.1% (preliminary figure)
- Germany: 0%
- Italian economy: no growth
- Japanese economy: -0.4%
Tourism Shares Slump during Political Rift with Beijing
In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is experiencing an escalating political conflict with China concerning Taiwan.
Stocks in Japan's travel and retail companies have fallen significantly after China urged its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan.
This decision by Beijing escalated a diplomatic feud that was triggered by comments from Japan's recently appointed prime minister about the possibility of sending troops in the case of a hypothetical Chinese invasion on Taiwan.
The situation triggered a surge of selling across Japan's leisure stocks.
- The Tokyo Disneyland operator stock dropped by 5.7 percent
- Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3%
- The national carrier fell by 3.75 percent
"The ongoing tension over Taiwan and Beijing's travel warning advising against travel to Japan introduces near-term headwinds for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Tourists from China represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's international visitors, making retail outlets, luxury retail, and tourism services particularly vulnerable."
Economic Decline Breakdown
Japan's GDP fell by 0.4% in the July-September quarter, as manufacturers' overseas shipments were affected by tariffs imposed by the United States recently.
Exports were a key driver of the decline, dropping by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.
Earlier this year, the US administration had proposed Japan with a new 25% tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15 percent when the two nations concluded a trade agreement.
Private demand also declined, by 0.3% compared to the previous quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's real gross domestic product contracted by 1.8% in the three months through September.
"Japan's economy was stable in the initial six months of this year and the latest GDP data showed that growth is halted temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be back on a gradual recovery trend going forward."
The US administration has recently acknowledged the impact of tariffs on US consumers, reducing duties on imported food products including meat, produce, coffee and fruits amid increasing concerns about increasing costs.
