The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people were killed and more than 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
