Gareth Southgate has declared that he is not seeking a comeback in football management, noting that it would be difficult to match the special mission he felt as head of the Three Lions.

He suggested his aim to dedicate his efforts toward engaging young people and countering what he called a pervasive negative narrative presently prevalent in the country.

Embracing Fresh Opportunities Outside of The Sport

Speaking on air, Southgate was questioned on talk linking him with open coaching positions in the Premier League and other leagues.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

Dedication to Role Models

Leading up to the release of his new title, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, Southgate stated that he is “very passionate” about offering guidance for the youth, utilizing experiences from his period as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate believes that his journey coaching England, during which the team evolved from being widely disliked to greatly admired, holds general lessons.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Speaking from his experience as a father, Southgate remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Unity Over Discord

The former manager stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often centers on conflict.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he stated. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s new release, titled Dear England, is set to present further insights on guidance and national identity based on his notable time in football.
