No league sells competitive balance like the NFL: it's their core marketing message. Yet following ten games in this campaign, this is not a competition featuring uniform distribution separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. Within the National Football Conference, at least, the picture becomes more distinct. Los Angeles and Seattle (both standing at seven wins, two losses) look like the most complete teams across the league, and delivered overwhelming triumphs on Sunday. The 6-2 Eagles even with their challenges maintain a deeply skilled squad across the NFL, comparable to Green Bay (five wins, two losses, one tie). The Lions also (6-3), with their fluctuating form in trench play and navigating internal staff conflicts, have shown they're capable of dominating quality opponents. For each of these squads, you can still easily envision a route to the final game.

Muddled AFC Picture

Turning to the American Football Conference, championship race is a jumbled mess. The four teams leading their divisions at this stage: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (all at 8-2) along with Pittsburgh (5-4 record). Read that again. No Chiefs presence. Not the Bills. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. The usual contenders, backed by the league’s best quarterbacks, display either glaring roster weaknesses or have suffered medical setbacks.

Parity Mechanics

To some extent, this is exactly what the league wants. Yet observing the current division frontrunners in the AFC still feels strange. Aspects of each franchise meet championship standards, but not in their entirety. Indianapolis Colts

Beginning with the Colts, the signal-caller hasn’t quite reached pumpkin status. Yet the past two games have raised concerns. Except for fumbling away a contest they should have won facing Pittsburgh, they would currently hold a 9-1 record as the league's best. In the prior year, they were old and slow. Now they’re young, fast and unafraid. Nevertheless, one cannot overlook how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They've encountered the most manageable schedule throughout football, yet vulnerabilities remain. Drake Maye has taken sacks on 35 occasions – the second-most in football – including particular impacts he suffered last weekend proved brutal. Over time, those beatings accumulate.

Broncos Situation

Denver stands at eight wins similarly, and the perception remains as if they’re holding their breath. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have narrowed to within one game of Pittsburgh, but how rapidly this occurred represents criticism toward the Steelers' uneven performances. That the Ravens started with a 1-5 record and currently seem capable of division victory reveals much about the entire AFC.

Traditional Powers

The Ravens' form part within a trio of powerhouses – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, who would still strike the greatest concern for opponents if they qualified. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, yet Kansas City and Buffalo persistently undermine themselves.

Buffalo Bills
