A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
